Financial Assistance, Scholarships and Loans for Foreign Students Studying in United States

How to get scholarship and financial assistance as foreign student?

Many international students get scholarships if they pass Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

In general, all international students my evidence that they have financial resources to finance their education as requirement to study in the United States. However, many universities have grant-in-aid programs and financial assistance from endowment funds, foundations, and specific departments of the universities and colleges. Grant-in-aid is generally given to foreign students who receive funding from their own native countries.

Take advantage of your sporting skills in getting scholarship

Easiest way to get scholarship is to have outstanding skills in sports, music and arts. Also, if you continue your education at graduate school, then getting assistantship and stipend becomes easier (more difficult to get financing for undergraduate students and those who have J-1 and J-2 visa).

How do you apply for scholarship in United States as an international student?

First, you need to apply

You need to start by filling out Free Application for Federal Student Aid [FAFSASM]. Application is easier than before and free. Many states and universities use FAFSA to determine your eligibility to get scholarship. Many private educational institutions also use this form as well.

Student Loans for international students

Many commercial banks in the United States offer student loans to foreign students if co-applicant is an American citizen or Green Card holder (permanent resident). International student who has a Green Card can also get Stafford loan.

If you, as a foreign student, cannot find an American citizen or permanent resident to sign the student loan agreement with you, then you may apply to Global Student Loan Corporation (GSLC). GSLC may ask your parents to co-sign in some instances.

Canadian students can get loans from International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC).
